Department of Nephrology

Nephrology is a medical super speciality that deals with the functioning and diseases related to the kidney. Kidneys are the sophisticated filtering units of the body. On average, the kidneys of a healthy adult process about 180 litres of blood daily to dispose of extra water and waste material in the form of urine. Any alteration or dysfunction in the anatomy or physiology of the kidney can cause acute or chronic renal diseases which can seriously affect the functioning of the entire body.

At Ashok Hospital, our Nephrology department is equipped to manage the full spectrum of kidney disorders — from early detection to advanced critical care.

Our Commitment

Our nephrologists strive to deliver the best possible care to patients suffering from acute or chronic kidney diseases, combining clinical excellence with compassion and a commitment to improving quality of life.

Conditions We Treat

Our nephrology team is capable of diligently evaluating and managing all types of renal diseases, including:

  • Acute (sudden onset) renal diseases

  • Chronic (slow ongoing decline in renal function) renal diseases

  • Blood in the urine (hematuria)

Frequently Asked Questions

You should consult a nephrologist if you experience any signs of kidney dysfunction, such as swelling around the eyes or lower limbs, decreased urine output, persistent high blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, or unexplained anemia. Additionally, patients with diabetes, uncontrolled hypertension, or a family history of kidney disease should seek regular nephrology screening.

  • Acute kidney disease (AKI) is a sudden loss of kidney function, often reversible if treated promptly. It can result from dehydration, infection, or medication toxicity. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a slow, progressive decline in kidney function over months or years, usually caused by diabetes, high blood pressure, or glomerular diseases. CKD is not fully reversible but can be slowed with proper management.

Yes. Our dialysis center is functional round the clock with ultramodern stations and well-experienced dialysis staff. We also have a separate setup for hepatitis C patients to ensure infection control and patient safety.

Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) is a slow, gentle form of dialysis used for critically ill patients in the ICU, especially those with unstable blood pressure or multi-organ failure. Ashok Hospital is one of the few hospitals in the region to offer CRRT for both children and adults.

Hemodialysis filters blood using an artificial kidney machine, typically performed at our dialysis center 2–3 times per week. Peritoneal dialysis uses the patient's own abdominal lining as a natural filter and can be performed at home after proper training. Both options are available at Ashok Hospital, and your nephrologist will help you choose the best fit for your lifestyle and medical condition.

Yes, to a large extent. Preventive nephrology focuses on early detection and lifestyle modification. Keeping blood pressure and blood sugar under control, staying hydrated, avoiding unnecessary painkillers (NSAIDs), and getting annual kidney function tests (serum creatinine, urine routine) can significantly reduce your risk of kidney disease.

We provide complete pre-transplant workup and post-transplant care, including immunosuppression management and long-term follow-up. Our nephrology team works closely with urologists and transplant surgeons to ensure seamless care for transplant recipients.

You can book an appointment by calling our helpline at +91-7565955004, visiting our daily OPD (Monday–Saturday, 9 AM – 5 PM), or booking online through our website. Walk-in emergency consultations are also available 24/7.
